The National Maritime Museum commissioned us to create a digital learning tool that would engage school groups in their Traders and Atlantic galleries. The tool needed to grab their attention and help them understand the stories behind the objects in the cases. It also needed to be able to feedback to a teacher at the end of a task and facilitate discussion amongst the class.
We developed the Discovery Tablet, a touchscreen device that utilises image recognition to allow students to investigate and interrogate the things around them.
Based on the idea of an information treasure hunt, groups can create team flags, take photos of the artifacts in the gallery, and discover hidden content.
We created a protective sailcloth and cardboard case for the tablets too. We worked with master sailmakers to produce an outcome with an appropriate tactility and aesthetic.
