Updating Happiness – Stefanie Posavec The Wellcome Collection
The Brief
On Happiness is a season of free events, activities and two exhibitions – Joy and Tranquillity – at The Wellcome Collection which celebrate the complexity of positive emotions and invite you to explore the big questions. We were commissioned to create an interactive installation and website, with artist Stefanie Posavec, to bring her Updating Happiness project to life.
The Solution
Stefanie created an algorithmic system that generates a unique design, based on your answers to a series of questions about your feelings on happiness. Various parameters change the colour, pattern, design elements and font depending on the answers you give. We developed a bespoke software app and website where you can answer the questions and then generate your unique artwork which you can then download as an image. You can also choose to add it to the large scale projection installation, situated at the entrance to the museum. The projection refreshes every 15 seconds with a new selection of the latest artworks generated, displayed in a unique random mosaic layout.
